56K Access

There are, at this time, three standards for 56K modems; v.90 (the ITU ratified standard), K56Flex and X2 (the older and incompatible standards which have largely been replaced).

geeksnet currently supports v.90 and x2 on its 3Com/USR TotalControl racks.

All 56K technologies require a very clean phone line, with no more than a single analog digital conversion in the connection. Several national magazines have reviewed and field tested 56K modems, and estimated that only 80% of locations meet these requirements. Your actual connection speed with a 56K modem is not guaranteed or even likely to be 56kbps. Actual connection speeds range from 26.4 to 53.3 kbps, with an average of 42,666 kbps, regardless of your computer's speed or OS.

Testing your line for 56K compatibility

You can test your phone line. This test works equally well for all 56K technologies, and does not require that you already have a 56K modem (but does require that you have at least a 28.8 modem).

LineTest has three requirements:

  • You must reside in the United States of America or Canada
  • Any manufacturer's V.34 modem, installed and connected to a phone line
  • Any terminal application, such as Windows 95/98 HyperTerminal, RapidComm, QuickLink II or MacComCenter
